Short biography:

David Montaigne, is a 37-year-old academic cardiologist (MD) on a position of Professor in cardiac physiology at the School of Medicine of Lille (Université Lille, France). He obtained his Doctoral Thesis of Biological Sciences (PhD) in 2010 (Université Lille) and is accredited to supervise research (HDR). He has joined the INSERM unit UMR1011 (Lille), headed by Prof. Bart Staels since 2013. In this team, David Montaigne leads “cardiovascular translational research” projects. David Montaigne is also in charge of the cardiovascular exploration department at the University Hospital CHU Lille since his return from a post-doctoral fellowship in London in 2014 (Prof A Tinker,QMUL and Prof D Hausenloy,UCL). He has published 50 papers in the field of translational research regarding cardiac disease pathophysiology (h factor 15) with recent first-author publications in J Am Coll Cardiol and Circulation journals.

David Montaigne and his collaborators have significant experience in translational research exploring cardiovascular disease pathophysiology illustrated by several first-line academic publications in cardio-vascular journals.

Key words:

Cardiac function & energetic metabolism, mitochondrial function, ischemia-reperfusion, type 2 diabetes.

  • Research interest:

Mitochondria, cardiac function and cardioprotection.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Patients suffering from CHD face myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, not only when they experience an acute myocardial infarction, but also during the cardiopulmonary bypass required for coronary artery by-pass graft surgery (CABG), a major intervention for coronary revascularization. During cardiac surgery, i.e. coronary artery bypass graft and/or valve replacement, the heart is excluded from the systemic circulation by aorta cross clamping allowing the surgeon to work in a blood-free operative field but imposing ischemia-reperfusion damage to the myocardium. Preventing cardiomyocyte death after ischemia-reperfusion is still a first-line unmet clinical need, since most recent cardioprotective approaches failed in the clinic.

We hypothesize that poor cardiac mitochondrial function, as encountered in diabetic and old patients, is responsible for poor myocardial function and IR tolerance. We thus anticipate that boosting cardiac mitochondrial function by interfering with nuclear receptor signaling is a relevant pharmacological target in these patients.

Our translational research project ranges from clinical trial to human myocardial sample exploration and molecular biology and is designed to bring evidence and relevant approaches to improve patient care.

This project will benefit of the quite unique opportunity of a cooperative effort of university hospital clinicians with basic science researchers with international established expertise in the field of nuclear receptor, pharmacology and exploration of both rodent and human myocardium. The project is supported by granted access to state-of-the-art technological platforms and daily access to human myocardial samples. The group belongs to the European Genomic Institute for Diabetes and as such has access to the most recent technologies in animal facilities, genome-wide transcriptomics, cellular and molecular biology.
